The Lucky Cat bottle cage was designed in collaboration with first-generation Asian American artist Jake Tong, whose work is heavily influenced by Chinese, Korean, and Japanese pop culture. The design is inspired by the maneki-neko beckoning cat, a figure that originated in Japan and is said to bring good luck. The Lucky Cat name comes from China, where the maneki-neko is referred to as zhaocaimao ( lucky cat or wealth-bringing cat. )
